Modern Fencing Choices

Stylish, modern fences add value to your home and look great for years to come, but how do you choose which is best for your home?   To help with your decision, we have put together a few simple questions to help you narrow down your choices.

What do you want your fence to achieve?

This is usually comes down to two choices; whether the fence will be a barrier against unwelcome visitors, but does not block the view, or if you prefer a solid finish that is completely private.

A fence that allows you and others to see through decreases the chance of potential burglars hiding from view, whilst also keeping a connection with the landscape inside and outside of your fence, for you and passersby. Privacy is important for many people though and a solid, high fence not only safely encloses a property, but also blocks it from unwelcome viewing.

What style is your home?
Do you want your fence to blend in or stand out?

So you have an idea of what you want your fence to do, the next step is to assess your homes architecture for hints on the type of fence design that will work with your style. A design motto from Andrea Nilsen (Nilsen Landscape Design) can immediately help to simplify your fence design choice, “Simple home, simple fence; Ornate home, ornate fence”.

If you prefer your fence to complement to your home’s style, you do not need to limit yourself to an exact match and imitation of the finish.   Instead, you can incorporate the style, by picking out features such as a colour or a product used on your home and continue it in your fence.

This fence pictured is a great example of this, the louvre colour matches the copper guttering and the fence is constructed from a similar product used for the house.

Or if you prefer to make a statement you can create a contrast with the colour or type of fence material you use.

These owners chose architectural slats in a contrasting colour for their statement fences
