Choosing the Right Shower and Mirror for a Bathroom

22 February 2023 by Dan Rawling

Appropriate use of space in bathroom design has always been an important consideration. HomePlus is an expert at making unique showers and mirrors for bespoke bathroom spaces of all shapes and sizes and we've been doing it for over 50 years. With medium-density housing within New Zealand continuing to be a popular building choice, innovative design of bathrooms and systems for townhouses and apartments is a critical component now and for the future.

There are a lot of considerations that go into designing a modern bathroom. From mirrors, storage of towels and clothing and the essential which includes shower/bath and basin. It is easy for a bathroom to quickly become cluttered, however good design and appropriate product choices can be transformational for even the smallest of bathroom spaces, with all of that considered HomePlus has you covered and is perfect for modern bathrooms. Shower or bath? Many of us like on occasion relaxing in the tub, but when space is a premium, a shower will use much less floor space and will ensure more room available in the bathroom for other features, or just to allow you to move freely, crucial for that early morning rush to get ready in the morning with families. If the space requires a glass shower unit that is not a standard “off-the-shelf” fit HomePlus has several custom-made shower solutions.

Choose the right shower. Frameless vs Framed? Designed to stop water from spraying and splashing outside the shower into the bathroom, our framed glass shower screens feature specially designed profiles and seals to provide the best leak-proof functionality. A frameless shower enclosure, whilst aesthetically pleasing, is not guaranteed leakproof and traditionally is best combined with floor tiles. A semi-frameless shower screen can supply the best of both worlds. Our custom manufactured glass shower doors are available in a variety of different styles and with a range of hardware options. All of which are designed to maximise available space.

A frameless glass shower screen is great bathroom choice for scenarios but especially smaller areas as wont encroach on space and will tie in the floor and shower area. It also won’t block light coming into the area from windows. Frameless glass is the perfect choice for a bathroom designed with wall and floor tiles and the correct colour choice will make for a space that will feel inviting and comfortable. Frameless glass is also incredibly easy to clean and maintain, essential in these busy times.

Another appropriate option to use in a restricted space, would be our range of framed offerings including the bi-fold Magna range that folds in half before opening (pivot options) or a sliding solution like our Trident (semi-frameless option) shower screen will free up room in a tight space to create room for basins and storage. Sliding doors or a bi-fold shower screen are perfect when you don’t have room to swing a door open and are an elegant way to finish off your shower enclosure design.

A larger bathroom that allows more space and options for how a shower door functions and looks make a semi frameless or fully frameless shower a popular choice for many. The additional use of glass makes a naturally luxurious style. If a large space to use a big shower screen will ensure a stylish finish.

Most bathrooms will have a mirror, be smart with your choice as they are also perfect for providing the appearance of space. A custom semi-framed or framed mirror that hides the wall mountings keeps your design clean, sleek, and means that you can pick a mirror size that can make the most of your wall. HomePlus custom semi-framed or framed mirrors are perfect for this. High-quality mirror glass, in a choice of Mirox® flat or round mounting profiles can be powder coated to a colour of choice.

The products come in a range of standard and custom colours to choose from and can be customer made to fit most spaces and come with 5-year warranty (2 years for shower installation). There are also multiple choices for glass such as toughened safety glass or Waterford Styrene. Ultimately the best way to utilise space in a small or medium-sized bathroom is to custom design what you need to fit. This is where the HomePlus specialists come in, leveraging the nationwide HomePlus network of installers with decades of experience to combine technical guidance and support with expert installation, to create elegant and functional bathroom spaces that are also, unique, stylish, and innovative.
