Clever Door Design Makes A Room Multi Use

Great design is about more than aesthetics. It’s about creating spaces that adapt to the needs of the people who use them every day. For this purpose-built daycare centre, flexibility was a key consideration from the very beginning.

Drawing on extensive experience in educational environments, the project architect designed a space that could easily transform throughout the day to support a variety of activities. The result is a practical and thoughtfully planned environment that works just as well for playtime as it does for rest time.

In the under-two's area, a set of multi-purpose interior doors from the HomePlus 350 Series was specified to create a flexible solution for changing daily requirements. During active play sessions, the space remains open and welcoming. When afternoon nap time arrives, the nearby puzzle area beside the centre’s charming feature tree is quickly converted into a quiet, enclosed sleeping space.

The innovative system features three sliding door panels that roll smoothly out from behind adjacent partition walls and are securely locked into place using integrated drop bolts. This allows staff to reconfigure the room with ease while maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for children. Careful attention was also given to the materials and finishes. A central panel of transparent toughened safety glass provides clear visibility, allowing caregivers to easily supervise children while maintaining separation between spaces. Complementing the glass, Laminated Dawn Grey Melteca infill was selected for the upper and lower sections, while Natural Satin Anodised mid rails matched the door frames to provide a clean, contemporary finish.

Safety was naturally another priority. The bottom guide tracks sit flush against the floor, eliminating potential trip hazards and ensuring little feet can move around safely.

Installed by HomePlus Canterbury, the doors have become an integral part of the daycare’s daily operations. The owner is delighted with the result, praising both the functionality and durability of the system, which continues to perform reliably in a busy, high-use environment. This project demonstrates how smart design can maximise space, improve functionality, and create environments that adapt seamlessly to the changing needs of everyday life.
