Is this the Perfect Outdoor Living Area?

30 May 2019 by Steve Huish

After a year-long renovation, the homeowners are thrilled with the finished makeover on their family home and are particularly proud of the outdoor living area, an outstanding example of flexible space for year-round living and the pièce de résistance of the build.

Working closely with an Architect, the homeowners created a design that modernised and opened up the family home, with a particular focus on improving indoor-outdoor flow to the deck and pool areas used by all three generations of family.

Must haves for the dream outdoor living area were:

  • Year-round usability
  • Indoor Outdoor flow – blurring the line between the inside and outside
  • Flexibility to deal with the weather

Designed as a direct extension of the living area, the outdoor living area centre-piece was the opening Louvre roof, chosen for year-round use no matter what the weather was doing. Automated louvre roofs offer the flexibility to let the user control how much light, shade, air or cover they want for the enjoyment of the outdoor space, on their terms.

Incorporating the Louvre roofs into the finished structure was a real team effort, with the builder and architect working closely with the local HomePlus Taupo Louvre roof dealer to bring the homeowner's dream to life. Working with the builder was vital to achieving a top-quality finish, together making sure that the roof structure supported and integrated the Louvre roof, especially the internal fittings such as guttering and electric wires, for a cohesive finish.

Impeccable design and detailing on the renovation, such as matching powder coat colours for the Louvre roof and window joinery, have been vital to the stunning, seamless finished look. Hidden cavities set in the walls, which allow the doors between the indoor and outdoor area to disappear when opened, are another clever detail. Coupled with door tracks fitted level to the floor, these details blur the line between the indoor and outdoor spaces, achieving the dream of perfect indoor-outdoor flow.

Knowing they have created a year-round outdoor living paradise, the rugby-mad homeowners are looking forward to inviting friends over this winter, opening up the louvres to enjoy the night sky, eating fresh pizza from the oven and watching the game on the big screen TV.
